Social Prescribing is an initiative from the NHS which is in its trial phase in Cornwall and gathering momentum.
The idea is simple, medicine is not always the only or whole solution. Sometimes exercise, joining social groups or participation in relevant activities can make a big difference to those who feel isolated or have long term conditions.
This probably sounds like preaching to the converted because the U3A has developed from similar principles, but that is exactly why the U3A is getting involved.
Some time ago AgeUK created the Cornwall Link website to provide a central source of community information; it includes groups and organisations offering support and opportunities for individuals, families, carers and volunteers.
This website, https://cornwall-link.co.uk, is likely to become a useful tool for surgeries when recommending additional support for patients, where appropriate.
On the website you will find a wide variety of groups signing up to offer their services, e.g. from cafe and lunch groups to walking football and Nordic walking!
If you search for U3A, you will find that Saltash and U3A groups throughout the county are well represented.
